In 1977, Michael Gaughan demolished the motel to build the Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino, which opened on March 2, 1979, with 150 rooms and a Victorian-themed casino featuring stained glass murals, including the notable Garden of Earthly Delights. Despite opposition from nearby resorts over traffic concerns, the Barbary Coast thrived, adding 50 rooms in 1983 by converting a parking floor and boasting one of Las Vegas’ most popular sportsbooks by 1987.
